MISSING IN ACTION

As a teenager I attempted to join the Virginia National Guard. I did great on the ASVAB test and was excited about the upcoming military training. I was under the age 18 and by law I needed the permission of both of my parents to enlist. My mother met with the recruiter and signed the required documents. I needed the signature of my father. The dilemma – he was nowhere to be found. I had no idea how to reach him or contact him.

My father and I had been extremely close. We talked every day even after him and my mother separated. However, this time of my life he simply disappeared. He had his own challenges that was dealing with and our contact went from daily to nothing. I could not track him down to sign my paperwork. I was disappointed but more hurt and negatively affected by not having contact with my dad for nearly a year.

In reflection, I knew it was not the will of God for me to join the Virginia National Guard or the Army at that time. God used that incident as well as the counselor for the National Guard giving me a prophetic word from the Lord. I learned years later that First Sergeant Cousins was a pastor’s wife. God used her to strategically intervene.

NOTHING IN COMPARISON

The sense of abandonment I felt that year having no contact with my father and being unable to contact him is NOTHING compared to the millions of individuals who have been impacted by being the spirits of rejection and abandonment. God led me to teach on the spirit of abandonment during a recent video teaching series. Many received inner healing as the Spirit of God walked them from brokenness and woundedness to wholeness. Many individuals shared traumatic stories of being abandoned by parents and rejected by their own families.

God has hope for the individual who never knew their father. God has healing for the individual who never heard their mother tell them that she loves him or her. God has a promise for the individual who never felt supported and loved by his or her own family. God has an embrace for the individual who father lived in the same town but never bothered to check on them. God has a special place in His heart for the individual who was verbally and/or physically abused by a parent.

TWO TYPES OF ABANDONMENT

Abandonment can happen on many levels but may be divided into two main categories: physical and emotional abandonment. Physical abandonment happens when there is an absentee parent, a person is put up for adoption, made to live with relatives other than biological parents, and/or placed in an orphanage. Emotional abandonment is when a parent or caregiver is physically present, but the child does not receive affection, proper care, love, or attention. This can leave a child feeling lonely and rejected. Sadly, both types of abandonment hurt and may have negative impact on a person’s psyche and emotions.

SYMPTOMS

A person who has deep wounds of rejection and a spirit of abandonment may struggle with the following issues in their life. Satan knows how to exploit soul wounds and hold us in negative cycles. Fear of abandonment.

1- Issues trusting people even those who are trustworthy
2- Difficulty expressing one’s emotions or true feelings
3- Fear of being alone
4- A controlling spirit in relationships
5- Overly sensitive to any form of criticism or constructive feedback
6- Difficulty establishing emotional connections with others
7- Purposely sabotages or moves on from relationships as a defensive mechanism
not to be attached (to avoid future abandonment).
8- Cycles of bouts with depression that seem to happen for no apparent reason or when one
Feels rejected
9- Persistent emotion of feeling unwanted or unloved

I believe many individuals who have dealt with strong rejection and/or abandonment in their life have wrestled and struggled with multiple of these symptoms. Often deliverance ministry (casting out demons) have been attempted on people dealing with abandonment and this often is not efficient or enough. Until the areas of rejection and abandonment are pinpointed and dealt with by the Spirit of Grace many who love God remain in bondage.

THE GOOD NEWS

Thanks be to God that He can destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8) and His Word is anointed to heal the broken heart. When God called me into ministry, He did so from Luke 4:18. In this chapter, the Lord Jesus makes a public declaration of the mantle upon his life and ministry.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor; he has sent me to HEAL THE BROKENHEARTED, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised….”

The word “gospel” is derived from two Old English words, “god” = good and “spel” news. There is good news if you have experienced heart ache and trauma from abandonment. Jesus is a healer. Jesus is a lover of your soul. Jesus has already come to take away inner pain and turmoil! Jesus can not only heal but mend broken pieces of your being and give you inner peace. I remember my pastor years ago used to define peace as “nothing broken, nothing missing”. That is what God wants to do for you. Heal the broken areas and fill the empty space of your heart with his goodness.

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you!”

THE PSALMIST PROMISE

Psalms 27: 10 (KJV) “When my father and mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up!” (KJV)

What a powerful prophetic declaration made by the psalmist who wrote this chapter. It reveals the psalmist confidence in the Lord’s provider, protector, and advocate for the abandoned. Also, this verse reveals that the Lord has a special place in his own mind and heart for individuals who have been rejected. The Lord steps in for the fatherless or motherless and fills the empty void. God takes up the case cause of the abandoned…..”the Lord will take me up!”

Reading this verse from different Bible translations reveal several great factors about God’s promise to the orphan, rejected, traumatized, and abandoned.

(HCSB) “..the LORD cares for me.”

(The Lord loves you. The Lord promises to take care of you as an individual and supply all your need through Christ Jesus)

(NIV) “…the LORD will RECEIVE ME”

(No matter who has rejected or forsaken you God receives you because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ).

(ESV) “…the LORD will take me in”

(We are never left “out in the cold”. God always has a place in his heart and family for us)

(NLT) “…the LORD will hold me close”

(God desires to reveal himself in a deep and meaningful way to the believer)

(ISV) “..the LORD gathers me up!”

(He heals the brokenhearted and restores your soul (Psalms 23))

WHEWWWW! A study of this verse by itself is enough to cause one to want to take off running and worship God!

JESUS OWN WORDS

Matthew 28:20, “I am with you always, unto the end of the world.”

Jesus promises to never leave or forsake us!

A PRAYER FOR THOSE WHO HAVE FELT REJECTED OR ABANDONED

Dear Father God, we thank you that there is a special place in your heart for those who have been rejected, abandoned, or traumatized by childhood trauma. We ask that you reveal this special place to that who have suffered from cycles of depression, discouragement, loneliness, and feeling unloved. We speak your promise into existence that you will take up the cause of those who have been forsaken by their own parents and family. Father by your Holy Spirit please surround your spiritual sons and daughters with other believers who will embrace them with your love. We decree by the anointing of the Holy Spirit all chains and bonds upon the minds of those afflicted with abandonment would be broken as you free them to walk in the glorious liberty of Jesus Christ. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen!
