Be a First Responder! – A Word by Harmony Vuycankiat
Last night I dreamt that I discerned a problem with someone before anyone else did but I didn’t respond to the problem fast enough. I saw the warning signs and knew what the issue was but ignored the prompting of the Holy Spirit to address it. Ultimately, help was ushered in to resolve the situation but it came through someone else and the problem had gotten worse before help arrived. At that point in the dream, I let guilt overtake me and reduce me to bowing to the fear of man (by listening to man’s voice instead of God’s) which hindered me from doing any good. Ouch!
While praying about the dream this morning, I heard the Lord say, “Be a First Responder.” I definitely humbled myself and asked the Lord to show me where I have discerned something that he has shown me yet ignored it due to fear of what others may say. But I believe this message is for others as well.
I believe God wants me to prompt the Church to be more sensitive to his guidance and to the Spirit’s discernment more than ever before. We can prevent a problem (sin, sickness, shame, etc…) from progressing in a person’s life if we are just willing to speak in grace and truth what we see by the illumination of the Holy Spirit.
What is a First Responder? Google Dictionary says a First Responder is “someone designated or trained to respond to an emergency.”
Now you may think, as I did in the dream, that you are not trained to respond correctly when you see an urgent need arise. But the truth is, if the Lord gives you the ability to see what others aren’t seeing (as he gave to me in the dream) then he will empower you with the Holy Spirit to act accordingly.
1 John 2:20- “But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.”
The need I saw in the dream became evident to others as time progressed but I was able to see it through the lens of the Spirit first. Likewise, we, as followers of Christ, have been equipped with heavenly sight so that we can help those who are crying out from the inside in order to save them from further pain or despair. This is the mercy and the love of our Father. He uses us to deliver his messages and bring his healing but we have to be willing to act in obedience right away.
I am so glad the problem was fixed in the dream by other people who came in to help but I woke up feeling sad because I didn’t get to play a part in helping. Not out of vanity or self seeking glory but because I missed a divine opportunity that the Lord lovingly trusted me to address. He trusted me to see and I waited instead of acted.
Today, I pray for myself as well as for you that we would be First Responders ready to act when the Lord shows us a need in the Spirit. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Just obey and God will give you the rest of the details as you step out in faith. Believe that he wants to use you!
God is so good that he will always bring someone to meet the need if we choose to say no to his prompting. But as for me, I don’t want to miss out on the miracle waiting on the other side of my obedience. God gets the most glory when we choose obedience because it is in our weakness that his strength is magnified! He sends the exact right amount of help through us and we get empowered to do good just like Jesus did. Amen!
Acts 10:38- “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”
