Content But Not Settled – A Word by Taran Schlig
I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be
content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need,
and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of
being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry,
whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who
gives me strength.” – Philippians 4:11-13

I am usually a forward thinker, a pioneer, forerunner, always looking ahead
to the next thing that God desires me to do. I know God has made me this
way for a reason, but this isn’t always a good thing. I can get so caught
up in the vision for the future that I will often miss fully embracing or
enjoying the journey of the process. I have prayed for years that I would
be content in all circumstances and situations just like it says in
Philippians 4, so what is the problem? God reminded me that it’s good to be
content but it’s also good to not settle there. You have to keep taking the
I believe God wants us to find the balance between learning to be content
with where we are currently in life, yet continuing to have faith for the
more that God desires to bring us! God wants to continually increase the
vision for our lives. Ephesians 3:20 it says, “Now to him who is able to do
immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that
is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus
throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” God has an amazing
plan for our lives and he wants us to be content with where we are
currently without becoming settled with staying there forever. There is
always more he desires to do, but usually he will not move us forward into
more until we become content with where we are in the present.

On the flip side of things, it is easy to become satisfied, settled and
complacent in our walk with Him. You may be thinking, “well, there are
several things that I have been believing God for that just haven’t
happened.” I want to encourage you to take a look at those things to bring
them back to the Lord and ask Him if there is anything you can do right at
this moment to begin moving to the vision he has given you for your life.
Those things haven’t gone away, and if God spoke those to you then they
still remain a promise to you.
Perhaps you are like me and you struggle with finding contentment in the
day to day always longing for what God has for you in the future? Maybe you
feel like you have become settled with where you are currently, and forgot
certain aspects of the vision for your life? I encourage you today to ask
Holy Spirit to help you find the balance between contentment and not
settling. Ask Holy Spirit for a look at the fresh vision he has for your
life and then ask him to help you be content with where you are currently,
while moving forward into where you are going.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the
door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who
seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. “Which
of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he
