DIVINE DIRECTION: LEAVING THE FAMILIAR by Stephen Young
“The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” 4 So Abram departed as the Lord had instructed, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. (Genesis 12:1-4, NLT)
This week the Lord has put on my heart to share on divine direction. I’m going to touch on different types of direction through examples we find in the Bible. Sometimes we are instructed to go, stay, go back, fight, stand, and the list goes on. What I write about each day may or may not apply to you right now, but it may in the future. Wherever you are at in your walk, I pray this week will give you some encouragement and some tools to keep pushing forward.
In the passage above we find that Abram was instructed to leave his native country and his family and go to a land that God would show him. The promise that came with it was that he would be made a great nation, blessed, and made famous. Abram was instructed to leave the familiar. My wife and I have experienced leaving the familiar. With it comes excitement, questioning, and major adjustment. Leaving the familiar to go to something unfamiliar has been one of the most exciting times of our lives, but also one of the most difficult times. All in all, God is faithful and He always sees us through. God may instruct you to leave something familiar to step into something unfamiliar. It may not be a location, it could be a job or ministry position.
What you have to remember when going through this process are the promises of God. I’m sure Abram had a lot of questions as things didn’t always go as he thought they would go. What God promises will always come to pass no matter what circumstances show between leaving and arriving.

You’re never too old to be called into a new direction. Abram was 75 years old when he left his native country for something unknown. Don’t ever say you’re too old, or too young, to respond to the divine direction God is giving you.
God may be calling you to leave something familiar. I can assure you, if you are, there is a promise attached to the direction. Step out and follow the Lord’s leading, one step at a time, one turn at a time, God will show you the way as you step out and go in the direction He is leading.
