Prodigals – we either have one or we all were one.

I have loved you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3)….Do you ever wonder, or ponder, what that looks like? Everlasting? Well, in my chats with father God, I have often shared my pain, my gut wrenching agony that has become a part of me, I carry it yet no one sees it. It is ever present. I often imagine Job, or Jabez being called ‘pain’, and share my own present reality with the Father.

What’s striking is His responses of “me too” and “I understand”.

Imagine, the God of The Universe, Thee All Powerful, All knowing, All seeing…….He understands, yet even more, He empathizes with me in my pain. You question, ‘But I thought God is perfect peace and pure love?’ He is; He even answers, “I AM”. Yet that same God wrapped Himself in flesh and blood; His desire for us was that great. He is pure and holy, lacking nothing; but He first directed His love toward us because . . .

Everything without ‘us’ just wasn’t enough.

Back to pain. I am the parent of a prodigal. I was a single parent in the fullest sense of those words and I gave up everything for my child. I hear Father stop me saying, “Me too”. Being totally caught off guard, I pause, then continue; I put my own desires, my dreams, my plans, everything aside to pour my heart, soul and mind into my child. Again I’m interrupted by The Father, “Me too”. Pausing again…… How could I try to do everything so perfectly right, so self sacrificing, to be left without My child? I hear Father again, “I understand”.

I’m stunned! My heart is stabbed with the reality that this is who I once was, a prodigal! My eyes well with tears…I feel Father’s presence tenderly envelop me in ever present, unconditional love; it’s the only way He loves. And somehow, I know He’s got this. He’s got my prodigal, just exactly how He has always had me.

He’s never left. He knew the end from the beginning.

All my pain, my inexpressible grief, He knows. And He wastes NOTHING, entrusting us with pain like that of ‘The Father’, molding and shaping us into His likeness, the image of His Son, trusting us to go from Prodigal to being ‘Ambassadors of The Kingdom of God’.

“All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s trespasses against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ: Be reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:18-20
