Jesus of the Orchard

A Word by Westley Roderick

I saw the Lord walking between a row of trees and what looked like an orchard, as far as the eye could see there were trees north and south and east and west. He then walked up to a tree and began to look down at the roots of the tree to make sure they were healthy. From there, he began to inspect the branches of the tree testing their strength wow looking for any signs of decay or death on the branch. What took place next took me by surprise. After inspecting the trees stature and root system the Lord began to shake the tree violently.

I asked, “What are you doing Lord?” Which he replied, “I am looking for fruit.”

Immediately I recalled the story in Mark 11 with Jesus and the fig tree. In this situation Jesus walks up to a fig tree looking and expecting figs to be on the tree but He doesn’t find any and He is rather disappointed. Jesus condemns the tree and this befuddles the disciples, they even go as far to explain that it is not the season for figs. Jesus was not concerned about the season because He was looking for fruit.

The following morning the Lord asked me if I would like for Him to elaborate on the vision I had the previous night, of course I wanted Him to.

“The fruit I am looking for is not one to be seen with the natural eye. I am looking for fruit which is only of the spirit and has no flesh to it.”

But the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions:

joy that overflows, peace that subdues, patience that endures, kindness in action, a life full of virtue, faith that prevails, gentleness of heart, and strength of spirit.

Never set the law above these qualities, for they are meant to be limitless. – Galatians 5:22

Paul gave a similar message to the people in Corinth:

Love is large and incredibly patient. Love is gentle and consistently kind to all. It refuses to be jealous when blessing comes to someone else. Love does not brag about one’s achievements nor inflate its own importance. Love does not traffic in shame and disrespect, nor selfishly seek its own honor. Love is not easily irritated or quick to take offense. Love joyfully celebrates honesty and finds no delight in what is wrong. Love is a safe place of shelter, for it never stops believing the best for others. Love never takes failure as defeat, for it never gives up. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

The fruit the Lord is looking for is love.

Anything without love is a clanging symbol. In this hour the greatest power we can demonstrate will be love, it was love that compelled Jesus to go to the cross and it is love that He has awoken us for.

Like the fig tree, Jesus is not concerned about the season but whether or not we are producing fruit. Though we may have winter months, Which we are challenged and maybe not feeling ourselves, Love is the acceptable fruit for all seasons.
