Lean In – A Word by Joe Joe Dawson
I was recently spending time in prayer and I was having a moment of just extreme gratitude with the Lord and then in that moment I heard the Lord say, “Not a lot of people do this.” l was caught off guard by this statement from the Lord and continued to pray. Then He spoke to me again and said, “Not many people lean in.” When the Lord said this, I immediately thought about John the Beloved.
In John 13:23, we learn that while all the other disciples were arguing, worrying or betraying Jesus, John had his head on Christ’s chest. If you put your head on someone’s chest, you hear their heartbeat. This is an incredibly intimate thing to do. Then I had a powerful moment with the Lord where I began to think about my own life and the many believers I have encountered over the years in ministry. Many times, we get so busy in life, caught up in the day to day and we forget to just stop and lean into the Lord.
One of the things that has sustained my walk with God over the years has been my intentionality in pausing, forgetting about everything that may be going on and really getting alone to have really intimate and focused time with the Lord. Psalm 97:5 says that “The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.” It is so important, now more than ever for each of us to spend that quality, focused time in the presence of the Lord and drawing near to Him in order to hear His heartbeat.
Another scripture that came to mind was Psalm 25:14 that talks about how God shares His secrets with His friends. We cannot complete our Matthew 6:10 mission of bringing Heaven to earth without this kind of closeness with the Lord. If we want to see God’s Kingdom come and will be done on earth as it is in Heaven, we must first walk in intimacy with Him. Now is the season for us to lean in.
Position yourself to lean into the Lord in this time. It is vital to your walk with God and to the calling of God on your life that you openly lay your heart before God in prayer and really lean in. One of the things I will often do before I will walk away from a time of focused prayer is to just ask the Lord if there is anything else, He would like to say to me. When we take moments like this and decide to stop and just kind of lean in, we can hear words or instruction from God that could totally change everything.
In the noise and chaos present in the world today we can easily miss important moments with the Lord. However, when you have the mindset of intentionally leaning in to hear Him then you will always be exactly where He wants you to be and on the cutting edge of what He is doing or wanting to do in the earth. Never lose that desire to lean into the Lord like John the Beloved. Be the one that in the midst of everything else will put their head on Christ’s chest to hear His heartbeat for you, for your family, for your business or ministry, for your city and for the world. When we intentionally lean in like this with the Lord, we live a lifestyle of Matthew 6:6, a lifestyle of being found in the secret place with God.
In this season, be found leaning in, drawing near and really listening to God’s heartbeat. Make time for those quiet moments with the Lord because He has so much to share with you and so much He wants to entrust to you in order to advance His Kingdom. This is a season where God is looking for those that will lean in. Lean into the Lord and watch what happens. When you lean into the Lord, He will lean into you, grab hold of you and speak to you about whatever you need or He wants to reveal to you. Lean in!
