Never Too Old to Serve the Lord!
This past weekend I had the privilege to volunteer with Kairos Prison Ministry. My wife and I have done prison ministry before in the past, but this is the first time I got to experience prison ministry with Kairos.
On the first day the team spent most of the day preparing for the big weekend. During lunch, I was blessed to be sitting with a WWII Navy Vet name Pop who was 90 years old and has been doing prison ministry since 1997! I was astonished by how many years he has served God, and even more astonished that Pop is still serving the Lord at 90! I was encouraged and my faith was increased.
2 Corinthians 4:15-16 (NIV) All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
I think back to many people I knew who “threw in the towel” in ministry during their younger years. Too stressed, burned out, and discouraged. I have battled those emotions many times in ministry and even at times was ready to throw in the towel too. But God never gave up on me so I could not give up on Him! God called me to youth ministry 8 years ago when I was 36 years old, I remember even then thinking “I’m too old for this”. Thankfully I’m still a kid at heart and relied on God to give me the energy needed to serve in youth ministry. I learned quickly I was not too old for youth ministry and I saw the need to be a spiritual father to a generation.
Psalm 71:18-19 (NIV) Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come. Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens, you who have done great things. Who is like you, God?

Pop didn’t allow his age to determine if he was qualified to do prison ministry. He is full of energy and joy. I was blessed to see him dancing in worship, and minister with vigor. Retirement from ministry is not in Pop’s mind; he plans on serving the Lord for as long as he lives! I got to witness the fruit of his faithfulness through the lives of the inmates who were touched this past weekend. There were a lot of other older men in their 60’s-80’s serving on the prison ministry team who were inspiring too.
Psalm 92:12-15 (NIV) The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, “The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.”
I want to encourage you to never give up serving the Lord, no matter what area of ministry you are in. Yes the road is not always easy and sometimes life is like a roller coaster, up one day and down the next. Hold on to your calling, your gifts, and your heart for God! You’re never too old or too young to serve the Lord! Serving God can be quite the adventure, and thankfully, the journey never ends!
Psalm 23:6(NIV) Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Matthew 25:35-40 (NIV) For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
