Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.”Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”-Matthew 9:37-38
Today I want to write with you an article about power evangelism. If the Body of Christ ever needs to hear the “Go” of the Gospel it is right now. When the body of Christ is challenged from the pulpit to evangelize, many feel like they aren’t “called” to evangelize. Jesus commands us in Mark 16:15 that we are to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature.
I want to start out by talking about what evangelism isn’t. Evangelism isn’t a church invite. Even though a church invite is important and you should invite people to church, that is not proclaiming the Gospel which is what evangelism is.
There are many different styles of evangelism. Some people like to use the Ten Commandments to show an unbeliever that they have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. While, I personally have used this way before and people did pray to receive Christ, it wasn’t very effective. It wasn’t very effective because it felt like I was selling them something. There is a better way which is what I want to talk about today. That way is power evangelism.
Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed from the devil. He even says that we would do “greater works” than He did. As I was reading through the Gospels I noticed that Jesus opened the eyes of the blind, cleansed the lepers, and opened the ears of the deaf. He cast out demons and even raised the dead.
2 Corinthians 2:4 talks about a people who have a form of godliness but deny the power of God. We need the power of God back in the church. Pastors need to quit running from the power in the name of seeker sensitivity and start running to the power of God. Where there is no power there hasn’t been much prayer. The Bible talks about being true seekers. It says those who seek God with all their hearts will find Him. If we seek we would find. We must be a people who diligently seek God.
I like to do power evangelism on those who are atheist or agnostic. Those are the easiest to lead to Christ. When the unbeliever sees a demonstration of the power of God, they won’t be able to deny that God is real. Many have heard this preached from the pulpit especially if you go a charismatic church or revival conferences. But where we miss it is when the opportunities present themselves we let them slip away. We let fear cripple us. Then many think God is mad at them for not being obedient. God isn’t mad. However, you do have to realize that you may have been their only chance of hearing the Gospel. People are valuable. Everyone deserves an opportunity to experience God’s love. What if no one shared Christ with you? What would your life look like? Would you even be alive?
Acts 1:8 says we would receive power after the Holy Spirit comes upon us and we would be His witnesses. God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear but of love power and a sound mind. If you feel afraid and uncomfortable, then you should return to that place of prayer and really make sure you are crucified with Christ yet you live. Not you but the life you live in the flesh you live by faith in the Son of God who gave Himself for you (Galatians 2:20). If we aren’t reaching the lost we aren’t obeying God’s Word.
My first point is if you are going to evangelize effectively you are going to have to stop making excuses. Evangelism must be intentional. Simple open ended questions like “How can I pray for you?” or asking them about an obvious ailment they have in their body, like a limp or why they are wearing a brace can set you up with an opportunity to release the Kingdom of God from within you.
My next point is that you release God’s Kingdom by faith. If someone has a back injury tell them that you have good news for them. They will ask you what that good news is. Tell them that today the Kingdom of Heaven has come near them. They may not understand what that means but this is what Jesus commands His disciples to do in Luke 10: 8-9:
Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you; and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
When you speak those words into the atmosphere, the Kingdom of God is being released. John 7:37 says out of your inner most being rivers of living water would flow. God is on the inside of you and He wants out. Whatever the need is becomes possible no matter how impossible it seems because a new dimension of God’s glory is being released. The glory of God has been released by faith through your words. Glory has invaded every sound wave around you. Make sure when you declare this, declare it with boldness and loudly. That’s why the Bible says that death and life are in the power of the tongue. Our mouths have the power to bless or to curse. Stop cursing yourself and others and start blessing them!
Most of the time they will be a little confused about what God’s Kingdom coming near them means. I don’t try to explain or teach what the Kingdom of Heaven to them right at that moment. If you can show an unbeliever the Kingdom of God, they will sense God’s glory and surrender their life to Christ as His power is displayed.
I ask them if they want to be healed. Some do. Some don’t. Those that don’t is because they are comfortable with their infirmity. There is nothing much you can do for them except love them and ask them why they don’t want to be healed. Maybe they don’t want to let go of their disability check. Maybe they like having everything done for them. If they say they don’t have enough faith, tell them that you will have faith for them. I have seen people healed after saying that I would have faith for them. The majority of the people you pray for want to be healed.
I tell them, if you take my hand right now, and let me pray for you, God will heal you.

Now it is up to God. This is where the rubber meets the road. This is where your faith is tested. Some people are so desperate that they will grab your hand and squeeze you really tight. They have nothing to lose but their infirmity. You have nothing to lose either except your pride, your fear and unbelief.
Let’s talk about how to pray. When you pray, don’t ask God to heal them. Remember you are seated in heavenly placed with Christ Jesus. You have authority and power as a child of God. Command the sickness to leave, the muscles, the bones, the infection, the cancer whatever it is you are praying for to be gone. Then command the spirit of infirmity to leave in the name of Jesus. Command the spirit of death to leave them. If they are deaf, command the deaf and dumb spirit to leave them in Jesus name! Every spirit is subject to the authority of Jesus Christ. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill them.
Command all pain to leave too in Jesus name. After you pray for them, you have to ask them if they feel a difference. Tell them to be completely honest. If they don’t see any progress, pray for them again. I have prayed for many one time and they experience a partial healing. It reminds me of the passage of scripture where Jesus prayed for the blind man twice before he could see clearly:
“And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, ’Do you see ’anything?’ And he looked up and said, ’I see men, but they look like trees, walking.’ Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. And he sent him to his home, saying, ’Do not even enter the village’” –Mark 8:22-26
Sometimes you have to pray twice or three times or four times. Don’t give up. Even if they don’t get a miracle on the spot, God can heal them. Maybe the next morning they will wake up healed. I have experienced this. God always completes the good work He starts. More than often, an unbeliever will get healed immediately. God does this to show them that He is real. Miracles are kisses from the Father to His children.
Now they are healed. People react in all kinds of ways. Many will cry. Some will be in awe and thank you. This is where the door is wide open for you to evangelize. The first thing you want to do is give God all the glory. Jesus deserves all the glory. Once you do that ask them if they want to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Share the Gospel with them. A great passage to use is 1 Corinthians 15:3-5:
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
Then simply take them over to Romans 10:9-10:
…if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
All you do is tell them to believe in their heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and to confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and they will be save!
Now what? Welcome them to God’s family. Shower them with love. Exchange contact information. Invite them to church. Introduce them to your pastor. Buy them a bible. Start walking with them and help them become fully devoted followers of Christ.
That is how you do power evangelism.
Baptize Your church with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Let a boldness and power come upon them to heal every disease and to drive out every devil.
