Prodigal Sons and Daughters- A Word by Autumn Dawson
If you have been listening to Heaven very much, you’ve probably been
hearing that prodigal sons and daughters are coming home. I’m hearing it
all over from different ministers and different people. Many are beginning
to declare that this is a season for the harvest of prodigal sons and
daughters to come home. I don’t know about you, but that makes me very
excited. It gets me so excited to see what God’s going to do in this next
season knowing that prodigals are coming home.
When we start hearing prophetically what others in the body of Christ are
saying and what season we are shifting into, we need to begin to pray. One
thing I always ask the Lord when I hear prophetically about a situation is,
“What part do you want me to play in this season? How do I move into what
you have called me to do in this situation?” So, I just began to pray for
prodigals, for those who are away from God and once knew Him. I also began
to pray for those that may just be trying to run away from their calling or
destiny and need to get back to that thing that God has called them to. So,
as I was praying I began to ask the Lord some question, “What does it look
like when prodigals begin to come home? Where do they fit into the Church?
What do they do once they come back to God or come back to their calling or
purpose? How should we respond as the Church? How should we act?” Then the
Lord brought me to one of my favorite passages of scripture, Luke 15:11. It
says this, “There was once a man who had two sons. The younger son said to
his father, “Father, I want everything I have coming to me. I want my
inheritance and I want it right now.” So, the father divided all the
property and everything that was going to come to the son. Then he gave the
younger son his portion of the inheritance. And it wasn’t long before the
younger son packed up all of his bags and left for a distant country. There
he was undisciplined and dissipated. He wasted everything that he had.
After he had gone through all of his money, a famine came into the land.
And all of the sudden, this son who was once in the father’s house, who
once had all of these riches, began to lack and have want.
So, the prodigal son began to work for another man and began to slop pigs
in this other man’s field. While he was there, he was hungry and would have
been happy to eat some of the pig’s food but no one even offered him that.
So as he was there, the prodigal son began to come to himself. He began to
realize, wait a minute, living with the pigs is not where I belong. He
began to think about his situation and his father’s house. His father had
people who worked for him and his servants were given 3 meals a day. The
son began to reason and think, “Here I am starving to death and my father
lets his servant eat 3 meals a day.”
So, he began to prepare a speech for his father. He said, “This is what
I’ll tell father, I’ve sinned against God. I’ve sinned before you and I
don’t deserve to be called your son. Just make me one of your hired hands.
Make me one of your servants.” So he got up, and he began to run home to
the father. And this is what happened when the prodigal son began to come
home, when he was a long ways away, his father saw him. I found it very
interesting that the son was far off and his father was looking for him.
The father ran out to meet him, embraced his and kissed him. And the son
got ready to say his prepared speech, “Father, I’ve sinned against God.
I’ve sinned before you and I don’t deserve to be called your son.”
But you know what? His father wasn’t even listening. His father wasn’t
hearing anything about the speech the son had prepared. This is what the
father was doing, he was telling his servants, “Go get some clothes and put
them on my son. Go get the family ring, and put it on him because he
belongs to me. Put some shoes on his feet! Begin to slaughter the best
calf. Begin to prepare for a celebration because my son who was lost is now
found. My son, who I thought was dead, is now alive!” This is a perfect
picture of what is happening right now. I believe that we need to prepare
just like the father did for his lost son. We need to prepare a celebration
for prodigals. We need to prepare for what God is going to do in their
As I was just praying this is what I heard the Lord saying, “When prodigals
come home, we don’t need to treat them like slaves but we need to make them
sons.” My son, Ezra does not have to work for my love. It is a by product
of his belonging to me. God wrote books about these prodigals lives, just
like He wrote about us. God has a destiny for them. Before they were formed
in their mother’s womb, God had plans for them and His plans for them have
not changed. They are under full warranty. God cares for prodigals.

I asked the Lord, “God, show me what prodigals look like to you.” Then the
Lord gave me vision. Have you ever been in the supermarket and seen those
big posters on the wall that say, “Missing and Abducted Children” with all
their picture underneath it? That’s exactly what the Lord showed me. This
is how God sees prodigals. God is on an all out search for their hearts
even though he knows exactly where they are. God is looking for them. His
heart is for them and He hasn’t given up on the prodigals. He still has the
vision He has for their lives in front of Him. God still believe in His
prodigal sons and daughters. As the Church and as believers we need that
kind of heart for prodigals. We need to prepare for them. And when they
return, we don’t need to make them slaves in the kitchen, we need to offer
them a seat at the table because they belong to God. I am so excited for
this season. I’m excited to see what God is going to do!
If you are believing for a prodigal in this season, I think you need to
start preparing your heart. Get ready to put new clothes on them and mantle
them. Get ready to provide a ring to put on them, saying, “You belong to my
family. You’re not an outsider. You belong.” Prepare a feast and a
celebration to welcome them home and into the family of God!
