Refreshing in Time of Battle

One of my favorite people to read about in the Bible is David. David was the only person in the Bible that we know of that was a Prophet, a Priest, and a King. But before he was any of those things, he was first a young man with a heart for God. When David was somewhere between sixteen and eighteen, the prophet Samuel came to Jesse’s house to anoint a king. Seven of Jesse’s sons passed before the prophet and none of  them were chosen to be King. David was the youngest of the seven sons of Jesse, and God chose him. The prophet Samuel emptied his horn of oil over David and anointed him to be king. Although David was anointed to be King at such a young age, it took him several years to step fully into his destiny. What so many in the body of Christ do not grasp about the prophetic is that the prophetic ministry is for mobilizing the body. It is to cause a flow, but if we merely sit on the words we are given, then we become stagnant. Prophetic words that have been given to you have to be contended for. God expects us to step into those words of promise by faith.

Paul told his son in the faith, Timothy, “Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all” (1 Tim4:14-15).

Paul was encouraging Timothy not to neglect his gifts and also not to forget the words spoken over him by prophecy, so that it would profit him.

David was what you would call a breaker; he had a breaker’s anointing. He knew what his destiny in God was and he pursued it diligently. There was so much that came against David. King Saul who, for a time, was David’s mentor, tried several times to have David killed. It is said that David wrote the Psalms in caves when he was hiding from Saul and his army. Can you imagine the disappointment, the sense of betrayal, that he must have felt during that time. Most people would have given up at that point. Yet, David understood the importance of refreshing himself in the presence of the Lord  to give himself strength.

My horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of  an unicorn. I shall be anointed with fresh oil (Psalms 92:10).

David knew what is was like to be anointed. When the Prophet Samuel anointed David, he poured the oil over his head and it ran down his entire body. Oil is symbolic of the anointing; we need to have fresh anointing. David knew the importance of having fresh anointing. because it gives you strength to endure.

And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south , and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire; and had taken the women captives, that were therein; they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way. So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons and their daughters, were taken captives. Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep (1 Samuel 30:1-4).

David and his mighty men returned home; most likely, they were tired and hungry and came home only to find their village burned, and their wives and children taken from them.  The Bible says that David and his men began to weep until they had no more power to weep. David’s own men talked of stoning him, but in the midst of all of this, David made a decision not to give up on his destiny, even though in the natural, it looked as if there could be no way. The first thing David did was encourage himself; then he put on the ephod, which is the priestly garment. The Bible says that God gives the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness (Isaiah 61:3). David sought the Lord, the Bible says, and asked the Lord to pursue the army. The Lord replied, “Pursue, for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all (1 Samuel 30:8).

David and his men then pursued the Amalekite army, and they recovered everything that was taken from them, including their wives and children. Then David at thirty years old was anointed King of Israel and stepped fully into his destiny. Never let the enemy ever tell you that the prophetic words that have been spoken to you regarding your destiny will not come to pass. Pursue your call, and never let go of it.
