Retainer Wall
A Word by Shalini Aurora Muthusamy

In prayer this week I saw a picture of a retainer wall. I felt the Lord tell me that we as the Body of Christ need to build up our retainer wall – not let dirt (earthly elements) in and not cave into wind (pressures of life) that want to come in and mix with us. Why? Because what’s inside the wall is SOOO precious and sacred; we need to guard it and protect it. It is much more valuable that what is outside.

So, what are the characteristics of a retainer wall? It is strong and in order to be effective, it cannot have any holes in it – or else what is outside will come inside. So what is inside? It is the beautiful garden of God in our heart and spirit – His sanctuary in us.  This needs to be protected and guarded with all that is within us and valued above all that is around us – how people treat us, reputation, honor of man, status, career, riches, etc. That is truly loving God the way Deut. 6:5 talks about : “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”

Proverbs 4:23 says, “Guard your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Now, more than ever in our lifetime, we need to be mindful of this. To guard our heart from fear, bitterness, anger, stress, worry, doubt and unbelief. To become (and stay) undefiled, we need the Blood of Jesus to purify us continually. In order to do that, we need to be in His word continually and stay conscious of His presence more than anyone else (including ourself). Word and Spirit are a powerful combination.

Revelations 12:11 says, “they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.” Overcome the pressures and forces outside the retainer wall. When we don’t love our lives even unto death, nothing from our flesh, the world or the devil can get to us – through the wall.

“He that is dead is freed from sin” – Romans 6:7. Death may or may not be literal death – it can also mean death to our way of doing things, our controlling nature of ourselves, situations and others (which causes most of our stress and sin) and surrendering to His will and His way.

What are some things that can get inside the wall: Unforgiveness – offense gets in and blocks our communion with God. Like a layer of algae in a pond seems harmless but it’s very dangerous because it blocks the sunlight from entering deep into the pond and providing some of the nutrients the pond inhabitants need including detoxification. In the same way, offense in our heart blocks our relationship with God – preventing some vital cleansing that we need in order for the garden of our heart to continue to grow and flourish. It also prevents us from hearing directly from God in some key areas of our life.

Let’s make sure that our retainer wall is strong and secure and nothing gets inside our heart that can hinder our walk with Him. Whatever holes are in our wall, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal them to us and repair the wall in the way only He can.

“And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones; and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not (Isaiah 58:11). Verse 12 elaborates on the promise of God to those who keep their garden pure – how mightily God promises to use His prepared vessels for His glory.
