Rivers of Living Water

A Word by Dr. Pam Morrison

“On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.'”

John 7:37-38 NIV

Two things happened yesterday that seemed to me to be prophetic symbols of God’s heart and movement among us at this time.

I woke yesterday with a simple vision of a red and white checkered picnic cloth laid on the ground in a grassy pleasant place.

However, as I was waking, I heard just the slightest whisper in my spirit…words like these, “Do more, be more serious, work harder…these are chaotic times.”

My first reaction was, “Yes, I must. I must do this, more, harder. Be better. Not good enough yet.”

But then, I felt a check and a second set of thoughts flooded my mind and overrode those first words. They were, “I am not a Taskmaster. You are not in Egypt. Seek the secret place with Me. Acts of love will flow from you. RIVERS of living waters.”

That momentary tug o’ war between legalism and the Spirit was over in a moment. But I felt God say, “My people need to drive out the religious spirits as much as any other director of their wrong thinking. How simply and with such subtlety those thoughts creep in. Now is the hour to leave that behind and live from GRACE directed thoughts.”

The second thing that happened yesterday is I was invited to substitute for a small group leader who could not attend a teaching night at a recovery center. The course that would be discussed was the Alpha Prayer course.

When I checked the lesson for the night, I was disappointed to see that it was lesson 4 on “Unanswered Prayer.” It’s important to acknowledge that unanswered prayer happens and allow people to talk about this part of our prayer lives, but in this time of so much crisis from coronavirus to lack of jobs and income, and so on. I didn’t want to speak of this. I wanted to declare God’s victories.

So, I was surprised to discover that the course has been rewritten and topic #4 shared last night was now “Powerful Intercession.”

Instead of tackling grief and disappointment in prayer, we spoke of times that people have interceded and changed the weather, stopped terrorists, brought down the Berlin wall, caused the rescue of 1000s of soldiers from Dunkirk, and prayed so greatly they were seen repeatedly in the place they were praying for though they were somewhere else. It was an amazing night. I was thrilled!

Through it I heard God saying, “This is where my heart is. This is where I am taking you and taking my people – to be an overwhelming army of invincible intercessors – rooted in faith. You will overcome what the enemy has brought against you in my strength.”

I put all these things together, the picnic scene, the exposure of religious spirits replaced by the promise of living waters, and the emphasis on powerful intercession, and I felt God say, “Look up. This is where you are. This is where I am taking you. To freedom, to deliverance, to victory through partnering with the Spirit. Rejoice! Rejoice!”

God is saying, “Ignore those messages that smack of religion and striving. Listen to those messages that cause you to boldly approach God’s throne of grace that you ‘may receive mercy and find grace to help in [your] time of need.'” Amen! Thank you, Father! Hebrews 4:16 NIV
