Supernatural Provision – A Word by Peggy Morris

The Lord provides for His children beyond their own capability and limited power. He loves to delight and bedazzle us with His awesome wonders, for “Such amazing mysteries are found within every miracle that nearly everyone seems to miss. Those with no discernment can never really discover the deep and glorious secrets hidden in Your ways.”  Psalm 92:6  When the Lord moves on our behalf we are left awestruck, humbled and overcome at His goodness! “Breathtaking and awesome is Your power! Astounding and unbelievable is Your might and strength when it goes on display!” Psalm 89:13 It comes in ways that is beyond us taking the credit or claiming the glory.

2 Kings 4:1-7 is a beautiful picture of Philippians 4:19, “And my God will liberally supply (fill until full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” In just seven verses we see God’s love, protection and provision for a widow that is in great distress at the threat of losing her two beloved sons as slaves to a creditor at the death of her husband. She seeks out Elisha for help.

Elisha asked her what she had of value in her house, and she answered him, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house except a (small) jar of (olive) oil.” (2 Kings 4:2)

He told her to, “Go, borrow containers from all your neighbors, empty containers—and not just a few.” (2 Kings 4:3) The Message says, “all you can get.” He instructs her to shut the door behind her and her sons and pour out the little oil that she has into the containers until they are full. (2 Kings 4:5)

Even though it doesn’t make sense to our natural mind to gather empty containers (a lot) and fill them with oil from a jar that barely has oil in it, she obeyed the prophet and did it. The elements that are required of us are faith and obedience. As she followed the puzzling directions that Elisha gave her and her sons, what astonishment and shock must have overtaken them. As her sons brought her the containers, she poured the oil, and she filled every single container completely full of oil!

“When the containers were all full, she said to her son, “Bring me another container.” And he said to her, “There is not a one left.” Then the oil topped (multiplying).

Then she came and told the man of God, He said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on the rest.” 2 Kings 4:6-7

Not only did the oil pay off their debt, the scripture implies that she lived off the proceeds for the rest of her life. Her husband’s fear of the Lord, her faith to reach out to the prophet, and her obedience to act, saved her sons, paid their debt and set her up for life. “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance.” Colossians 3:23-24

“On one occasion, Jesus was preaching to the crowds onthe shore of Lake Galilee. There was a vast multitude of people pushing to get close to Jesus to hear the Word of God. He noticed two fishing boats at the water’s edge, with the fishermen nearby, rinsing their nets. Jesus climbed into the boat belonging to Simon Peter and asked him, “Let me use your boat. Push it off a short distance away from the shore so I can speak to the crowds.”

Jesus sat down and taught the people from the boat. When He had finished, He said to Peter, “Now row out to deep water to cast your nets and you will have a great catch.”      “Master,” Peter replied, “we’ve just come back from fishing all night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you insist, we’ll go out again and let down our nets because of Your Word.”  Luke 5:1-5

Peter was exhausted and did not feel like going back out to fish. He didn’t see the point, they had fished all night and did not catch a thing, and they had just cleaned their nets, but he was obedient nonetheless.

“When they pulled up their nets, they were shocked to see a huge catch of fish, so mch that their nets were ready to burst! They waved to their business partners in the other boat for help. They ended up completely filling both boats with fish until their boats began to sink!

When Simon Peter saw this astonishing miracle, he knelt at Jesus’ feet and begged Him, “Go away from me, Master, for I am a sinful man!’

Simon Peter and the other fishermen—including his fishing partners, Jacob and John, the sons of Zebedee—were awestruck over the miracle catch of fish.

Jesus answered, “Do not yield to your fear, Simon Peter. From now on you will catch men for salvation!”

After pulling their boats to the shore, they left everything behind and followed Jesus. Luke 5:6-11

Peter had to have faith to believe the words of Jesus and step out in obedience to receive his blessing. Jesus supplied them with the mens to provide for their families for a long time, the provision that the fishermen needed so that they could “leave everything behind and follow Jesus”.  Also through this astounding miracle Jesus revealed Himself, His deity and power to the men that were to follow Him. “You are the One and Only God. What miracles! What wonders! What greatness belongs to You!” Psalm 86:10

God’s supernatural provision comes to us in suddenlies, when we least expect it, in ways that we cannot comprehend and we are overwhelmed by His greatness! Every gift God freely gives us is good and perfect, streaming down from the Father of lights. James 1:17

The scriptures are full of such miracles, but I want to point out just a couple more:

When Peter needed money for taxes, Jesus told him, “go to the lake and throw out your hook, and the first fish that rises up will have a coin in its mouth. It will be the exact amount you need to pay the temple tax for both of us.” Matthew 17:27

When Moses led the people out of Egypt. “Now the Israelites had acted in accordance with the word of Moses; and they had asked the Egyptians for articles of sliver and articles of gold, and clothing. The Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they gave then what they asked. And so they plundered the Egyptians (of those things).” Exodus 12:35-36

“At last, God freed all the Hebrews from their slavery and sent them away laden with the silver and gold of Egypt.” Psalm 105:37 The Message says, “He led Israel out, their arms fill with loot.”

When the Lord asks you to do something unusual or strange, don’t discount it. Just because you may not understand it or figure it out in the natural, prss in and listen to the voice of the Lord. Oftentimes it is afterward that we realize that God had provision and blessing in store for us. Don’t be in doubt or disbelief and miss out on your miracle.

What if the widow had not gathered the containers for oil?

What if Simon Peter was too tired to go into the deep waters and cast his net again after fishing all night?

What if Peter thought it a crazy idea to catch the first fish, look into its mouth and find a coin to pay the taxes?

What if the Israelite children were too afraid or too embarrassed to ask the Egyptians for gold and silver?

Not only did each person have to have the faith to believe the things that sounded odd or strange, they had to actually act on it, being obedient for it to come to pass. And I guarantee that they were so happy that they did!

I am convinced that my God will fully satisfy every need you have, for I have seen the abundant riches of glory revealed to me through the Anointed One, Jesus Christ! And God our Father will receive all the glory and the honor throughout the eternity of eternities! Philippians 4:19-20

Expect something BIG and unusual! Something that’s unexpected and supernatural, above what we could ask or imagine! For, “The wealth of the wicked is treasured up for the righteous,” Proverbs 13:22 And that’s US! His plans for us are good, and the Lord says to you, “Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things.” Psalm 81:10

Go! Gather empty containers, “all you can get” and prepare for the filling of the Lord!

“For the Lord takes pleasure in His people” Psalm 149:4, so “if the Lord is pleased with us, He will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey and will give it to us.” Numbers 14:8
