“THE GOD THAT HEALS YOU” – A Word by Stephen Powell

“..If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”

This was a significant time in Israel’s history as the Lord had just led them through a fearful shaking event where after four hundred years of virtual silence on God’s part, and hard bitter bondage, the Lord broke through suddenly with great power and delivered his people from Pharaoh! What a roller coaster they must have felt they were on. Moses appeared on the scene after being preserved supernaturally, raised in the house of Pharaoh, then missing in action for forty years. He walked up to his people with a stick and declared that He had come to deliver to them. There was no army backing him. He was not wielding any natural weaponry. He was simply holding a stick, probably still stinking of sheep having been a Shepard for the last forty years, and he had this bold declaration. I’m sure many of the Israelites thought he was crazy and had no faith in what He was telling them. Then the impossible happened. Moses actually did it. With the power of God He brought Pharaoh to his knees in a very short period of time, and then the next thing the people knew they were walking away from Egypt with the wealth of Egypt, now a very prosperous and free nation. As I said, what a roller coaster!

God showed himself strong on their behalf. God supernaturally delivered them, protected them, punished their enemies, and preserved them in their Exodus. But then they came to the first pool in the desert, I’m sure in a very tired and thirsty state, and the waters were bitter, and they complained and blamed it on Moses (Ex.15:23-24). The amazing thing to consider is the Israelites’ propensity for unbelief no matter how fresh the awesome power of God was still etched in their minds and hearts. You would have thought that having seen all the amazing feats of God, all the amazing signs and wonders, all the magnificent displays of God’s raw power, that they would have approached the bitter waters and saw that as an easy problem for God to solve. But no, they immediately withdrew from their freshly renewed faith and went right back to their enslaved soul, the bound soul which emanates complaining, moaning, groaning, and unbelief.

There’s a lesson here for all of us. We must train ourselves as believers, as followers of Christ, to always keep the testimony of God in our lives. We must discipline ourselves to at times not consider the hardship in front of us, but look upon the breakthrough we’ve already seen God perform in our past and draw from that reality in faith. Why? Because when we do this we will see the salvation of our God once again in our lives! God does not change (Mal.3:6). As He was mighty on our behalf before, so will he be again. We just have to look unto him with faith and partner with him for yet another breakthrough in the moment.

Israel experienced four hundred years of hard bitter bondage, and there were things that were not going to be worked out over night, no matter how great the power of God was in recent days. This is where discipleship comes in when it comes to our walk with God. We must train ourselves in the ways of God, and train ourselves in the ways of righteousness and faith so that we might live the life that God has purchased for us and intended for us.

Moses was a wonderful leader in many regards. But one thing that qualified him to lead Israel out of Egypt was the fact that he spent forty years outside of Egypt himself. In many cases you can’t lead people out of their bondage, out of their mindsets, out of their unbelief if you’re right in the middle of it with them. It’s my belief that Moses was doing far more than just tending to sheep on the backside of the desert. It’s my belief that the burning bush commissioning experience was a culmination of an ongoing series of supernatural encounters that Moses had been experiencing in the desert of Sinai, being prepared in the supernatural and in intimacy with God to go back to Egypt, deliver the people, and then lead them out. Moses had to be emptied of Egypt, emptied of the world, emptied of unbelief, before He could lead a people out.

After the people complained the bible says that Moses turned and cried out to God for the answer to the bitter waters situation (Ex.15:25). Why was Moses’ response different than the people’s? Why didn’t Moses succumb to the same discouragement, the same spirit of unbelief? It was because God had already dealt with Moses’ unbelief years before! He had the cry of faith already thoroughly cultivated in Him, and as He turned to God knowing that God had the answer.

As Moses cried God immediately answered in the spirit of counsel and might. God counseled him to take a tree (a type of the cross) and throw it into the bitter waters, and that obedience and faith healed the waters and made them drinkable for the masses. God released His awesome power as Moses obeyed the counsel. We have to obey the word saints and heed his counsel if we’re going to see his awesome power displayed in our lives!

It was after this next breakthrough that the Lord revealed himself to the children of Israel as Jehovah Ropha, the Divine Physician, the God that heals his people. That is where divine health became a normal part of the nation’s experience. You see, before this they saw moments of breakthrough, they saw moments of miracles. That would be like the Christian that went to a meeting a received a miracle once when the evangelist prayed for them, but even though they saw a moment of breakthrough in their past they’re still suffering with sickness and disease ongoing. They’re still not experiencing daily divine health.

The children of Israel had never had this redemptive name of God revealed to them. So although they saw flashes of goodness, flashes of miraculous power, flashes of healing, they still didn’t know if it was going to continue. This is like the church today that looks back on the founding of the church under the ministry of Jesus and his apostles and they say, “Well, that was just for establishing the church. Miracles and healing has ceased.” It’s called cessationism. People who go to these churches are like the Israelites that believe that God has done it before for specific purposes, but they don’t have a revelation that it is actually a part of who God is. It’s a part of his goodness and nature. He is the God that heals you.

In your walk of faith don’t be content to just look back on history, just look back on moments of breakthrough in your past, and say, “Hallelujah, thank you God that you once did that.” No, God wants you to break out of experiencing miracles and healing here and there and step into the revelation of Jehovah Ropha, that He is the God that heals you and fills your vessel with daily supernatural strength, protection, and health. God wants you to walk in divine health!
