The Power of Being Held
A few years ago I decided that I wanted to be completely consumed by the love of Jesus. So I invited him to come and fill me with his love. My desire was to give all of myself to him, as a living sacrifice. I knew that I wanted to be set apart and totally consecrated to the one I love.
However, there was several pieces of furniture taking up too much space in the home of my heart. These were the idols of my heart, areas where I had not yet made Jesus the Lord over all. On my lips I declared him as Lord, but there were areas of my heart, where I refused to let him in. I had many other lovers, but I desperately wanted to make Jesus the one and only.
I was a believer, dead to sin and alive in Christ. Yet my decision to make Jesus my first love was a personal choice, a matter of the heart. So Jesus began to walk me up the heavenly stairway made of his vine, to teach me how to abide in him.
As we worked together to remove the unwanted furniture of worldly lusts, I came to a giant and unmovable stone. It was like the large stone that would be on an ancient tombstone. This stone was an area of my life where my spirit was willing, but my flesh was weak. I did not want this stone lover any more and I was determined to take it down.
It was an area of my life that I had used to comfort myself from pain. As much as I didn’t want to love this idol anymore, I just could not move away the stone. I could not let it go.
As I sought the Lord day after day, he showed me that the answer to my problem was hidden in John the Beloved. John’s name the means “God is a gracious giver”. I found there is power in resting in the love of Jesus. John would lean upon the bosom of Jesus. The bosom was the hollow part of the upper garment, that was used for keeping and carrying things.
In the last book of the Bible, John was there on the island of Patmos. The Thayer’s definition of Patmos means, “my killing”. While on the island of Patmos, John said that he was there on account of the word of God. He was there on the Lord’s day, which I found in some references as a day regarded as the time for restraining from indulgence.
For a very long time I felt God tugging at my heart to lay down this idol. It soon became a matter of obedience. Like John, I found myself in a place of self will killing, on account to the word of God. Jesus called me to deny myself, take up my cross and follow him. Oh but this giant stone was in the way. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t move the stone away.
The Lord showed me that the secret was in being loved. Like John, I needed to ‘be held’ by him. Jesus said to share this word with those who are walking up these narrow stairs with me. This is what he said,

“Do not let your heart be troubled. You have confidence in me. In your heart you know that I hear you, so whatever you ask according to my plan, will be granted to you. I am a gracious giver and whatever you ask in my name, that I will do.
We are the 3 in one. I am in my Father and the Father is in me. I have given you my spirit as a comforter to give you divine strength and to walk by your side. That the world may know that I love the Father, the commandment he gave, I obeyed. I laid down my life for you. Great love is this, to lay down one’s life for his friends. In your heart you have chosen to show me your love and obey me. I am here to help you achieve this victory.
Apart from me you can do nothing. To abide in me is to be continually held. When you are ready to walk, pause and wait for me. Call my name and then be still and wait for me. Through the door you have opened, I will come and help you. Do not walk alone, yield and wait for me. Step by step you will be held, I will carry you.
I will take your place to do this work and be the power that you need. All you need to do is slow down and be held by me. This was never meant for you to do alone, this is for my glory.
When you chose to marry your heart to me, I was ravished by your love. I saw through the eyes of your soul, a house you prepared for me. As we take down these old wooden idols, on the altar of your heart, I will consume you with the blue flame of my love and heal all the pain away.
I am the resurrection and the life, it is time to roll the stone away. I will wrap you in my garments, as you recline upon me. The power you need is released, as you lean into my love. I will not deny you anything you ask according to my will. Reach for me and find my peace, that in my joy you may abide.
You are the one I love. Rest completely my love and just be held”.
Day by day, choice by choice, I decided to make Jesus the Lord over my life. I gave him the vow of my heart to eternally be his bride. All to Jesus I surrender. I pray that you will too.
